In many situations, I provide exercises, readings, or videos to watch that support session discussions and as a way to apply lessons and skills.
What modalities do you use in your client work?
I use Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Solution-Focused Therapy, but I also incorporate other modalities as needed, like Existential Therapy and Faith-Based Christian Therapy (if requested). I utilize the research and approaches from John Gottman and EFT (Emotion-Focused Therapy) for couples.
What is your professional training/experience?

I received an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Liberty University (a CACREP-accredited program) and completed 3000 hours of supervision to become an LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) in Texas.

I interned and eventually got hired at a behavioral health hospital that offered inpatient and outpatient programs. In the outpatient program, I conducted group and individual therapy with a wide variety of clients, utilizing a treatment team approach, including therapists, nurses, and psychiatrists. This invaluable experience allowed me to see the positive outcomes of some of the most effective mental health treatments.

While working in the outpatient program, I also began working for a private group practice under the supervision of a highly experienced practitioner seeing individuals and couples. This experience was also invaluable as it taught me the value of developing genuine rapport with my clients and how to walk with them through their challenges.

Why did you become a therapist?

My journey to becoming a therapist started with my experience of being healed through therapy. I gained a lot of respect for the unique relationship you develop with your therapist and the power of having someone guide you to see things you might not see yourself.

For me, it was like receiving the keys to doors I never knew that I could open and walk through. In the end, I knew that I wanted to be a part of helping others, too. I know it’s a cliché to say, “When you do something you love, you never work a day in your life.” But this is one cliché I have to agree with!

What is your favorite kind of date?
I really love talking about this! It’s the simplest thing, but my husband and I discovered the McDonald’s App. For $1, we can buy a large vanilla iced coffee, go to our favorite spot by the river in our city, and just talk. This is truly my favorite kind of date!
What kinds of sports and outdoor activities do you like to do?

I love watching football and basketball, but I played soccer for most of my childhood and adolescence. I still love the sport, and my husband (who also played soccer) and I enjoy watching the World Cup.

And like sports, I like participating in most winter and summer outdoor activities. Skiing is high on my list, but I also like hiking, riding bikes, walking, swimming, etc.

When I’m not doing something active outdoors, I do the workouts led by Heather Robertson, who offers various free and ever-changing exercises using weights and body weights. I think it totally beats paying for personal training or a gym membership, although I know some people love those, too!

What kind of food do you like to eat?

I’m one of those people who really likes eating salads! But I’m not a vegetarian. I still love meat, too.

My absolute favorite food is a really good, juicy hamburger with sweet potato fries! I am from Texas, after all!

What's the most exciting place you've ever traveled?

This is definitely a hard question for me.

Since my husband, kids, and I lived overseas for 11 years, we traveled to some great places. I think one of my favorites is Germany. Everything looks like a postcard, and the architecture is incredible. The other one is probably Dubai in the Emirates. The Persian Gulf is incredibly beautiful, and I found the culture interesting and more international than I realized.
